Some great dental habits include brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing once a day, and going to the dentist regularly. However, there are some bad dental habits that you may not be aware of that should be avoided.
Nail Biting
Some people bite their nails when they are stressed or nervous. This habit can chip teeth. Moving the jaw forward to bite the teeth can place pressure on it. To stop biting your nails, try using bitter-tasting nail polish. Stress reduction and setting small goals can also be helpful. If certain things are triggers to your nail biting habits, try to hold or fidget with something to keep your fingers busy.
Grinding & Clenching Your Teeth
Grinding or clenching your teeth can cause chips or cracks in the teeth. This can also cause muscle or joint tenderness in the jaw. Relaxation exercises can help prevent grinding and clenching teeth.
Eating Ice Cubes
Chewing ice can cause a tooth or a filling to crack or break. Drink beverages with a straw or with no ice to avoid temptation.
Snacking Constantly
Eating snacks throughout the day, especially when the snack is sugary, can put you at a higher risk of cavities. To avoid this, eat more balanced meals that will leave you feeling fuller longer. If you do still snack, choose something that’s low in sugar.
Using Teeth as Tools
Using your teeth as scissors or another tool can potentially crack or break a tooth. Be sure to find something to give you a hand instead of using your teeth as they shouldn’t be used. Your teeth were meant for eating and speaking, not to be used as tools.
